About Study Course
Objective
- To provide dentistry students of the 3rd year of study with a comprehensive understanding of the aetiology, pathogenesis, classification and diagnostic principles of periodontal diseases, emphasising evidence-based, patient-grasped and sustainable approaches to periodontological care.
- Develop skills and competences in identifying risk factors for periodontal diseases, clinical investigation and treatment planning, as well as practice the correct and effective application of periodontal instruments and non-surgical therapy methods, integrating them with the principles of surgical and maintenance therapy.
- Promote the ability to implement quality and safe periodontal care independently and responsibly, in compliance with occupational environment ergonomics and infection control requirements, as well as develop professional cooperation skills in an interdisciplinary healthcare team, emphasising long-term patient welfare and ensuring sustainable treatment outcomes.
Preliminary Knowledge
Students must have acquired knowledge of human anatomy, histology and physiology, as well as general pathology, with a particular emphasis on head and neck anatomy. Basic knowledge of oral diseases and their diagnostic principles is required. Knowledge of oral microbiology and pharmacology is also desirable.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
1.Students will recognise and classify periodontal instruments according to their type and design, describe their design characteristics and outline sharpening principles. Define the intended purpose of each instrument and identify the appropriate oral areas in which the instrument is applicable.
Practical exam on a dental phantom • Midterm exam
2.Students will recognize and name the anatomical and histological structures of the periodont tissue and list their physiological functions. Identify aetiological factors of periodont diseases, characterize pathogenetic mechanisms and their effect on the structure and function of periodont tissues.
Midterm exam
3.Students will name periodont health assessment tools and essential clinical parameters.
Midterm exam
4.Students will outline the content and role of patient clinical examination data in periodontological diagnosis and treatment planning.
Clinical case presentation
5.Students will recognize different forms of periodontal disease, classify periodontal diseases and conditions, formulate basic principles of periodontal treatment, name treatment stages and their sequence, and outline the principles of team collaboration in periodontal disease care.
Teroethical exam
6.Students will formulate basic principles of periodontology, identify sources of scientific literature for in-depth study of the topic.
Individual work
Skills
1.Students will be able to correctly adapt and apply periodontal instruments on the dental phantom model according to the purpose of the instrument application, as well as demonstrate their correct sharpening.
Practical exam on a dental phantom
2.Students will be able to identify the anatomical and histological structures of the periodont, link them to clinical investigation data, and interpret the role of disease aetiology and pathogenesis in diagnosis and treatment planning.
Midterm exam
3.Students will be able to conduct clinical investigations and apply appropriate instrument adaptation techniques, atraumatically and ergonomically apply periodontal instruments in the patient’s mouth, observe principles of infection control in the workplace.
Midterm exam
4.Students will be able to systematically obtain and collect clinical data, reasonably evaluate the treatment strategy and its outcome, and prepare and convincingly present a structured clinical case analysis.
Clinical case presentation
5.Students will be able to carry out periodontal examination and determine diagnosis of periodontal diseases, evaluate prognosis of diseases and draw up an appropriate periodontal treatment plan. Will be able to diagnose and provide emergency treatment for acute periodontal conditions and use non-surgical (conventional) periodontal treatments. Students will be able to plan the stages of surgical and maintenance treatment, as well as professionally evaluate and interpret the results of periodontal therapy.
Clinical work
6.Students will be able to prepare independently for examinations, use scientific literature to promote professional development, perform simulated clinical case analysis, as well as prepare and present clinical case analysis in a structured manner.
Individual work
Competences
1.Students will be able to organise the ergonomics of the clinical work environment independently and responsibly by ensuring the correct positioning of the patient, lighting and doctor, as well as by complying with the requirements for the maintenance of a safe work environment and infection control. Will be able to select periodontal instruments according to the clinical situation and apply them atraumatically and efficiently, integrating theoretical knowledge into practical work.
Practical exam on a dental phantom • Midterm exam
2.Students will be able to integrate knowledge of periodont anatomy, histology, disease aetiology and pathogenesis into clinical activity by independently and responsibly making decisions regarding diagnosis, prevention and treatment of periodont diseases.
Clinical work
3.Students will be able to operate responsibly in the clinical environment, complying with the requirements of a safe working environment and infection control, integrate theoretical knowledge into practical activity and engage professionally with colleagues.
Clinical work
4.Students will be able to independently reflect on clinical experience, integrate theoretical knowledge with practical activity and professionally argue the chosen approach to diagnosis and treatment, demonstrate willingness to take responsibility for evaluation and communication of the clinical process in a professional environment.
Clinical case presentation
5.Students will be able to work professionally with the patient and the medical team, providing safe and high quality healthcare.
Clinical work
6.Students will be able to independently analyse and critically evaluate the sources of literature on the subjects of lectures, integrate acquired knowledge and skills into the assessment of clinical situations and formulate professional conclusions.

Students perform practical periodontal care in a clinical setting, working with real patients under the supervision of the teaching staff. As part of their clinical work, students demonstrate their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to the diagnostic and treatment process, adhere to professional and ergonomic principles, and ensure safe and high-quality care for patients. Particular attention is be paid to maintaining a safe working environment and meeting infection control and occupational hygiene requirements. Assessment of clinical work is based on demonstration of clinical skills of the student, quality of patient treatment documentation and expression of professional attitudes. The evaluation procedure and criteria are published in the e-studies. |

Students independently prepare and present one completed clinical case which has been treated during the practical classes of the study course. The presentation should not exceed 15 minutes. The purpose of the examination is to develop the student’s ability to document, analyse and present the clinical case by linking practical experience with theoretical knowledge in the field of periodontology. The evaluation criteria and sample presentation are published in the e-studies. |
