About Study Course

Objective

  1. To provide dentistry students of the 3rd year of study with a comprehensive understanding of the aetiology, pathogenesis, classification and diagnostic principles of periodontal diseases, emphasising evidence-based, patient-grasped and sustainable approaches to periodontological care.
  2. Develop skills and competences in identifying risk factors for periodontal diseases, clinical investigation and treatment planning, as well as practice the correct and effective application of periodontal instruments and non-surgical therapy methods, integrating them with the principles of surgical and maintenance therapy.
  3. Promote the ability to implement quality and safe periodontal care independently and responsibly, in compliance with occupational environment ergonomics and infection control requirements, as well as develop professional cooperation skills in an interdisciplinary healthcare team, emphasising long-term patient welfare and ensuring sustainable treatment outcomes.

Preliminary Knowledge

Students must have acquired knowledge of human anatomy, histology and physiology, as well as general pathology, with a particular emphasis on head and neck anatomy. Basic knowledge of oral diseases and their diagnostic principles is required. Knowledge of oral microbiology and pharmacology is also desirable.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Students will recognise and classify periodontal instruments according to their type and design, describe their design characteristics and outline sharpening principles. Define the intended purpose of each instrument and identify the appropriate oral areas in which the instrument is applicable.

Individual work and tests

Practical exam on a dental phantom

-
Test

At the end of the preclinical part of the study course, students shall take a practical test during which they demonstrate the recognition, characterisation, correct positioning of the patient and ergonomic working position of the physician, as well as the skills for adapting and applying instruments on the dental phantom model. The evaluation criteria are published in e-studies.

2.

Midterm exam

-
Test

The mid-semester examination consists of two separate parts, a practical test and a theoretical test.

  1. During the practical examination at the final class of the 5th semester, students in the clinical environment demonstrate on each other knowledge of periodontal instruments and periodontal clinical evaluation, as well as demonstrate the skills to atraumatically apply instruments in the patient’s mouth and perform a periodontal clinical examination. The purpose of the examination is to assess the ability of students to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills, taking into account the principles of a safe working environment and professional communication. The evaluation procedures and criteria shall be published in e-studies.
  2. The student is entitled to take the theoretical test only after successfully passing the practical test. The theoretical test consists of a test consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. A student is successful if he or she has received an assessment of “almost satisfactory” (4 points) or higher. The assessment “almost satisfactory” (4 points) evaluates learning outcomes at least 55%. The examination aims to assess students' knowledge of periodontal structures, physiology, aetiology, pathology, and disease forms.
3.

Clinical work

30.00% from total grade
10 points

Students perform practical periodontal care in a clinical setting, working with real patients under the supervision of the teaching staff. As part of their clinical work, students demonstrate their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to the diagnostic and treatment process, adhere to professional and ergonomic principles, and ensure safe and high-quality care for patients. Particular attention is be paid to maintaining a safe working environment and meeting infection control and occupational hygiene requirements. Assessment of clinical work is based on demonstration of clinical skills of the student, quality of patient treatment documentation and expression of professional attitudes. The evaluation procedure and criteria are published in the e-studies.

4.

Clinical case presentation

20.00% from total grade
10 points

Students independently prepare and present one completed clinical case which has been treated during the practical classes of the study course. The presentation should not exceed 15 minutes. The purpose of the examination is to develop the student’s ability to document, analyse and present the clinical case by linking practical experience with theoretical knowledge in the field of periodontology. The evaluation criteria and sample presentation are published in the e-studies.

5.

Teroethical exam

50.00% from total grade
10 points

At the end of the study course, students shall take a theoretical exam consisting of 100 multi-answer questions covering all topics acquired in the study course.
