About Study Course
Objective
To provide comprehensive knowledge of the development of the nursing profession in a historical context, nursing theories and their relevance to modern changes in healthcare, patterns of care, fundamental principles of professional and medical ethics, as well as the implementation of evidence-based care, while developing critical thinking and professional skills in the analysis of clinical situations, identification and formulation of care problems, setting of care objectives and priorities, planning and implementation of care in multicultural environments, patient education and application of research methodology and terminology in professional practice.
Preliminary Knowledge
Introduction to the use of the Library, medical terminology in a foreign language, propedeytics, anatomy, contact psychology and communication skills, history of Latvia.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
1.Explain the development of the nursing profession in a historical context and describe the main theories of Nursing, their importance and relation to changes in modern healthcare. Describe patterns of care and their application in the planning and implementation of evidence-based patient care in a multicultural environment. Understand the basic principles of medical and professional ethics, as well as the philosophical and ethical assumptions on which the professional activities of nurses are based. Describe principles of evidence-based care, basics of research methodology and terminology in healthcare.
Skills
1.Analyse clinical situations using critical thinking and theoretical knowledge. Identify and articulate patient care issues in the light of health disorders, individual and cultural needs. Identify care objectives and priorities, plan and justify care activities based on evidence and ethical principles. Describe solutions to care problems and develop patient education measures.
Competences
1.Apply the principles of professional and medical ethics in decision-making and professional activities. Integrate theoretical knowledge, critical thinking and research-based evidence into ensuring safe, high quality and patient-centred care.

Student prepares two presentations independently during the course, presented in a group with the aim of further exploring one of the topics to be learned in the course: on medical symbols and emblems in medicine, their importance and use today; about one of the Nursing theories, model analysis and comparison by chronology, level, approach, content. Analysis of study data (scientific paper). In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must complete the study course evaluation questionnaire on the student portal. |
