About Study Course

Objective

To promote knowledge on issues related to organisation, policy and funding of healthcare in Latvia and the world. To introduce students to theoretical assumptions and practical methods of management, their applications. To provide an understanding of the quality management system within the healthcare system.

Preliminary Knowledge

The concept of health, philosophy and medical ethics, introduction to evidence-based care.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to define the healthcare policy, documents of Latvian healthcare policy. To define and explain the healthcare funding system in Latvia and other European countries. To define the organisational structure of healthcare in Latvia, healthcare levels. Will be able to describe the application of general management principles and differences in the national healthcare system. Will know electronic health information systems.

Skills

1.Upon successful completion of the study course, students will be able to assess the documents and requirements of the healthcare system of Latvia regarding nurse practice. Will be competent in the organisational structure and management of healthcare. Gain an understanding of basic IT electronic information systems in the health sector (Doctor's Office; e-Health).

Competences

1.Will be able to justify the boundaries of their own professional activity and the professional activity of other healthcare professionals in the context of healthcare policy and legislation; apply various healthcare policy documents and legislation to the situation of a specific patient/client; to analyse, evaluate, synthesize and develop recommendations on certain aspects of the healthcare system; to analyse the basic principles of quality management system.

Literature analysis. Discussions in small working groups, assessment of documents and situations and formulation of opinions, presentations on class topics. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.

Evaluation of the study course (summative/cumulative). Presentation and Analysis (40%) and Theory Examination - Multiple-Choice Test - 3 (60%). Students who have missed classes (without a valid excuse) must additionally pass a self-assessment test. A 10-point grading system is used to assess students' knowledge and skills, and the criteria described in the RSU Study Regulations are applied in the evaluation process.
