Give students knowledge about the role of otorhinolaryngology in a general pathology, to acquaint students with clinical symptoms, current diagnostic, treatment and prophylaxis of ENT diseases and to develop necessary skills in clinical examination of the ENT organs.

Preliminary Knowledge

Anatomy, physiology, pathological physiology, acoustics, topographical anatomy and surgery, pharmacology. Preferable knowledge in radiology, oncology, infectious diseases, dentistry, neurology and physiotherapy.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.During the study course students will gain knowledge and will be able to: • characterise clinical anatomy of the nose and paranasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx and ear, outline physiology of the ENT organs and their main functions; • describe structure, principle of function and possible impairment of hearing and vestibular apparatus; • explain speech, language, and voice formation; • identify ear, neck and nose diseases; • classify treatment methods and organize treatment plan; • timely recognize complications of the diseases, in case of complicated and challenging treatment be able to organize multidisciplinary cooperation; • explain with anatomy connected and interacting organ anatomical specifics for different patient age groups.

Skills

1.Upon successful completion of the course students: • demonstrate skills and abilities in endoscopic examination of the ENT organs; • are able to interpret results obtained by additional tests: rhinomanometry, hearing tests and radiological investigation; • explain and recommend methods for preventing ear and throat diseases and ear hygiene methods to the patients and/or their parents; • comprehend pharmacological and surgical treatment methods of the ENT organ diseases.

Competences

1.• can plan own scientific research, using scientific literature based on clinical and academical trial results. Can explain principles of evidence based medicine; • can substantiate the plan of disease treatment they have chosen; • can evaluate and foresee prognostics of diseases; • have knowledge of head and neck oncological diseases' risk factors, treatment menthods and factors which affect prognosis.

Examination

1)Assessment of theoretical knowledge held on E-studies within one week prior to the corresponding practical class in a format of MCQ test (Multiple Choice Questions) or essay type questions about individually read material and literature about the topic. 2)During each practical class, each student is evaluated individually with a mark in a 10-grade system according to student’s involvement and activity during the class and the knowledge that he/she demonstrate. Criteria: • Student arrived on time for the class, • Student is in appropriate attire (white coat, change of shoes), • Student actively participates in the discussion, patient examination and/or analysis of clinical case, correctly answers teacher’s questions and is able to defend ones opinion. 3)Final examination - exam is held at the end of the 8th semester during examination period. During the Exam students’ theoretical knowledge about aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnostics, treatment principles and prophylaxis of ENT organ diseases is evaluated by a written and oral examination. Exam is evaluated with a mark using 10-grade system. Final grade: At the end of the course, each student receives a mark in a 10-grade scale. This mark consists of the individual evaluations during practical classes and exam grade (accordingly 50% and 50%).
