About Study Course

Objective

Raise awareness and promote knowledge acquisitions of current issues regarding the protection of children and family rights. The objectives of the course are to develop the skills to identify issues of family and children’s rights. Apply the knowledge acquired in the study process to the protection of family and children’s rights at international and national level.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Students will be able to define the concept of the rights of the child and to describe the system for protection of children’s rights in Latvia. Students will be able to describe and analyse the key principles of protecting children’s rights in Latvia and in the world. Students will have knowledge of how to recognise child abuse and will be aware of the inter-institutional cooperation in cases of violation of children’s rights. Students will be able to find and properly apply laws for the protection of family and children’s rights in compliance with national laws and regulations and international law binding on Latvia. Students will be prepared to work independently and apply mechanisms for protecting the family and children’s rights, and they will be able to defend and promote the compliance with these legal provisions in Latvia and in the world.

Skills

1.On completion of the study course, students will be able to identify and analyse potential problems related to the family and children’s rights, their causes and solutions to prevent them; they will be prepared to take the necessary remedial action in the event of a possible violation of the rights of the family and the child, by applying the relevant international and national laws and regulations with due regard.

Competences

1.The acquired knowledge will enable students to work in institutions related to the protection of the family and children’s rights; they will be able to understand the protection of the family and children’s rights on a cross-disciplinary basis, to identify problems and to offer solutions.

Independent study of the legal literature and practice materials specified; timely submission of the independent written assignment, an essay on the chosen topic related to the protection of family and children’s rights. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.

Examination: 50%; participation in the seminar: 20%; essey: 30%. Prerequisites for successful completion of the course are: regular attendance of lectures (at least 90%), participation in the seminar and a passed examination.
