About Study Course

Objective

Provide the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills and their improvement in accordance with the specialty Regulation in Paediatric Infectious Diseases, adopted in Latvia, and the requirements of the European Union regarding this specialty, which would allow the doctors to be competent in adult infectious diseases by reading literature or facing with them in their clinical practice, as well as allow to provide professional tertiary healthcare level help to the patient, and their family.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.Within the time given for the rotation the resident acquires knowledge and competence in acute and chronic infectious diseases in adults, their aetiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnostic algorithms and treatment principles, as well as infection control mechanisms, prevention and education programmes that will give an understanding of the characteristics of infectious diseases at different human ages.

Skills

1.As a result of the rotation the resident will be able to conduct the examination and evaluation of the objective clinical condition of a patient, to collect anamnesis of life and disease, prescribe additional methods of examination; will be able to independently collect clinical material for the determination of etiological factors of the disease, as well as to provide emergency medical assistance in acute situations.

Competences

1.• examine and assess the clinical symptoms characteristic of infectious diseases and syndromes; • create a patient’s individual diagnostic and treatment algorithm; • properly collect material for laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases and evaluate the obtained results, taking into consideration the nature of the method and the patient’s comorbidity; • choose the specific diagnostic methods, evaluate the level of their information and the application time; • plan infection control measures; • vaccinate and perform dermal testing.

During the study course the resident shall acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of most common acute and chronic infectious diseases in adults, their diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis in accordance with the tertiary healthcare level, as well as shall be able to give advice to patients, their relatives and other medical practitioners within the framework of their specialty.
