About Study Course

Objective

To develop understanding of general, special and functional embryology; development of cells, tissue and organs. To form an understanding of the histogenesis and organogenesis of specific tissues and systems.

Preliminary Knowledge

Biology and medical cell biology, histology, anatomy, genetics.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.On successful course completion students will be able to demonstrate understanding of embryology and significance of prenatal diagnostic methods, to describe structural features of primordia in tissue and organs at different developmental stages, to define risk periods in histo- and organogenesis, and to analyse the most often observed developmental anomalies.

Skills

1.Students will be able to detect microscopically primordia of the tissue and/or organs and approximate stage of development, to use embryological schemes and to evaluate the possible structure adequacy to the intrauterine stage.

Competences

1.Students will be able to recognise embryonic tissue and organ morphology and structure in clinical specimens. They will be able to analyse variations at different stages of embryonic development and distinguish between healthy and pathological tissues in specimens. The students will be able to estimate the significance of various inducers on the developmental processes with respect to postnatal life.

Assessment

Individual work

Title
% from total grade
Grade
1.

Individual work

-
-
The students study the given readings and literature independently in accordance with the topics of the course; they analyse embryonic specimen structure in the laboratory and prepare the protocols of their practical work.

Examination

Title
% from total grade
Grade
1.

Examination

-
-
• Laboratory class protocols of appropriate quality finished and submitted in due time; • Participation in colloquia and demonstration of the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills during the test. • Written multiple choice examination (50%) in combination with oral practical analysis (50%) of specimens at the end of the course. During the examination, the students’ theoretical knowledge of embryonic tissue and organ morphology and practical skills in analysing specimens and schematic images are tested. Students are given the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of important processes, inducers, risk factors and developments during embryogenesis and fetogenesis.
