About Study Course

Objective

To give students practical and theoretical knowledge and experience in oral health promotion and education for the elderly.

Preliminary Knowledge

Philosophy of Public Health and Health Promotion, Public Health and Dental Care, Prevention of Dental Diseases.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.To promote knowledge in: primary health and dental care; common risk factor approach; principles, approaches, planning of oral health promotion and education. Team approach to oral health education, skills in oral health education.

Skills

1.• To educate community about the prevention of oral illnesses, to promote oral health within different age groups, different strata of society. To educate them about the most important questions of oral health promotion: Applications of fluorides, importance of plaque control, tooth brushing and flossing; Nutrition and healthy teeth; Prevention of teeth injury; Smoking and oral health; Necessity of regular dentist`s and dental hygienist’s visits. • To use oral health education in different settings (dental offices, clinics, oral health care centers, health care centers, pre-schools, schools, municipalities, care institutions for elderly people). • To ensure dental services and oral health education for patients with special needs: patients with physical and mental illnesses; patients with difficult general illnesses; in case of specific treatment (irradiation, chemotherapy); patients who has fear of dentists. • To use suitable communication skills during the educational work, to take into account the age of a patient.

Competences

1.• To suggest and realize activities for public and individuals in oral health education and prevention. • To identify risks groups according to patient’s general health condition and bad habits during clinical session of dental care. • To identify risks groups according to patient’s skills in oral hygiene, saliva testing, intensity of caries, periodontal and oral mucosa conditions and occlusion. • To develop a plan for oral health education, prevention and clinical treatment, its precise and positive accomplishment individually for each patient.
