About Study Course

Objective

To ensure acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to the knowledge necessary for a forensic psychiatric expert, in order to prepare a forensic psychiatric expert for certification in forensic psychiatry in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia. To provide knowledge, experience, skills and competences to students necessary for making forensic psychiatric expertise.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

1.On the legal substantiation for the application of forensic psychiatric expertise, types of forensic expertise, including complex expertise; legal and medical criteria of legal incapacity, limited capacity, expert’s rights and obligations, expert’s responsibility; psychopathological mechanisms for activities dangerous for society, prevention principles of activities dangerous for the society; types of forced medical means, substantiation for their amending and cancellation; expertise institutions, operating principles; planning and organisation of expertise, operation principles of penitentiary psychiatry.

Skills

1.Deal with the materials of a criminal and civil case, make psychiatric diagnostics and forensic psychiatric diagnostics, analyse medical records by comparing, summarising and analysing them in relation to the materials of the criminal case and civil case; single out data of importance for the expertise which indicate towards any mental disorders of a person; provide a general review and analysis of the obtained data, as well as make impartial and justified conclusions; skills to foresee the dangerousness of the person subject to the expertise and depending on the degree of dangerousness, recommend the most optimal forced medical means; skills to draw up an opinion according to the requirements of the regulatory enactments by using terminology known to the person directing the proceedings, maintain the viewpoint expressed in the opinion in the court, answer questions of the parties of the proceedings, depending on one’s competence; skills to distinguish mental disorders from simulation, describe and substantiate them; ability to conduct complex expertise, separating the competence spheres of experts. Skills to observe deontology principles, apply methods and technologies used in psychiatry.

1.Diagnostics, care, communication, cooperation and interpersonal skills of persons with mental disorders, competence in expertise organization and planning, ethical, deontology and legal issues, education and science to ensure drafting of objective opinion.
